For most of its existence, 108 South Main Street has been a “social gathering place.” And what better place to gather than around Mc Gurk’s magnificent black walnut bar hand carved by Stuart Mark Smith. Mc Gurk’s Irish Pub, the name comes from a song by the Irish Rovers, opened in another historic building in the Soulard neighborhood of St. In the course of its more than three decades of existence, it became something of an American musical shrine, particularly in the clannish world of traditional Irish music.
The bar’s stained glass is more than 100 years old, and comes from an abandoned church in East St.
O’Fallon’s first newspaper was printed here, and it was the site of the town’s original power plant.
But given the building’s new life, the historic plaque on the facade mentions something especially significant.
